GENERAL SUMMARY:

The BPN Coding Specialist is responsible for assigning diagnostic, procedural, and complication codes to all inpatient, ambulatory surgery, emergency room and outpatient patient records. Ensures that all coded records meet the Federal, State and Payer coding requirements.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision and beliefs of Bryan Health and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Reviews appropriate documents in the EHR to assign procedural and diagnostic codes according to Federal, State and Payer coding requirements.

3. *Performs audits at each outside clinic and compiles the results.

4. *Reviews and corrects any denials from insurance companies.

5. *Answers questions from outside clinics regarding coding issues.

6. Works as a team member while focusing on accuracy and increasing productivity to meet turnaround standards.

7. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

1. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

2. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmaceuticals, medical terminology, disease process and diagnosis and procedure coding.

3. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

4. Ability to meet high standards of work accuracy and productivity.

5. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.

7. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

8. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Class work in ICD-10-CM, CPT Coding, and related courses from an accredited college or acceptable program required. PMI’s CMC certification or AAPC’s CPC or CPC-P certification or AHIMA’s CCA, CCS or CCS-P certification credential required. Prior coding experience in a medical environment preferred.
