GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Bryan Medical Center Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is responsible for the planning, provision and allocation of  resources necessary to carry out the day-to-day operations of the patient care division, consistent with organizational policy.  These responsibilities are accomplished by establishing appropriate performance standards, qualifications and expectations and by serving as a member of the Bryan Medical Center Senior Team. Responsible for the proper planning and allocation of resources under their control to include the preparation and monitoring of the annual operating budget and objectives consistent with the hospital’s strategic plan.

In collaboration with Senior Management and the medical staff, is responsible for operationalizing the overall philosophy of patient care and establishing and monitoring of clinical standards of care of all patient care areas under the position’s responsibility.  In addition, in areas where nursing services are provided outside of the patient care services division, the CNO will be consulted to insure appropriate nursing care services are provided to meet patient needs and clinical objectives. 

 

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  3. *Serves in the role of the Byran Medical Center CNO in accordance with Joint Commission NR-1.
  4. *Operationalizes the vision and strategic plan for patient care within the Medical Center through collaboration with key stakeholders.
  5. *Operationalizes the philosophy of patient care and clinical standards of care and practice; develops appropriate policies and procedures to support same; responsible for interpreting the mission and philosophy of patient care in relation to assigned patient care services.
  6. *Establishes mechanisms for integrating nursing standards in those areas of the hospital where nursing care is provided, including those outside of the patient care services division; serves as primary liaison for physicians in problem solving issues concerning nursing and patient care.
  7. *Establishes appropriate mechanisms to monitor necessary competencies required of patient care services personnel; ensures proper training and conformance to Medical Center Corporate Compliance Programs within the Patient Care Services function.
  8. *Implements an effective ongoing program to measure, assess and improve the quality of patient care delivered to patients through integration with the overall Medical Center Quality Plan.
  9. Keeps informed of current issues and trends including new procedures and develops appropriate mechanism for dissemination of such information.
  10. *Establishes procedures to define, monitor and adjust nurse staffing to ensure appropriate provision of patient care and effective workflow within the division; effectively controls salary and non-personnel costs to achieve appropriate service levels at optimum costs. 
  11. Completes an annual appraisal of budget and resource utilization and its impact on quality patient care and presents information as a part of budgeting process; prepares and submits divisional budget in accordance with established deadlines.
  12. Collaborates to attract, recruit, develop and retain high performing diverse workforce  including leadership.
  13. *Hires, trains, supervises, counsels and evaluates reporting Directors; conducts and submits annual performance appraisals and annual progress reviews as required.
  14. *Analyzes patient care support systems and interfaces with non-nursing departments for needed changes; develops plans to address issues.
  15. Promotes and role models collaborative physician/leadership relationships.
  16. *Chairs appropriate committees and councils within the patient care services division.
  17.  Serves on hospital, MSN medical staff and Board committees as required; serves as a nursing leader representative at medical staff department and committee meetings.
  18. Participates in professional and community organizations and projects to promote nursing and the medical center.
  19. *Participates with governing body, management, medical staff and clinical leaders in the organization’s decision-making structures and processes to include the annual strategic planning process and budgeting process.
  20. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Knowledge of hospital administrative policies, philosophies and principles.
  2. Knowledge of customer service philosophies and practices.
  3. Knowledge of ongoing healthcare trends.
  4. Knowledge of quality improvement, budgetary and financial methods and practices.
  5. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.
  6. Skill in conflict diffusion and resolution.
  7. Ability to develop written policies and procedures, and present pertinent information to numerous audiences, including Board of Trustees, medical staff, management personnel, and hospital employees.
  8. Ability to make operational and management decisions in response to changing conditions and in emergencies.
  9. Ability to make professional and administrative decision within the framework of Bryan Health's mission, facility policies and procedures, legal and regulatory requirements.
  10. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  11. Ability to schedule, direct, counsel and evaluate employee work and performance.
  12. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act.  Master’s degree in nursing or related field required. MBA and/or DNP preferred.  Minimum of five (5) years of progressive management experience within an acute care hospital required.  Prior experience in management across the continuum of patient care required.
