GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Department of Pharmacy has the responsibility for the implementation and coordination of drug control in the process of providing pharmaceutical care for patients of all ages within the Medical Center. Under the clinical supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, assists pharmacists in pharmaceutical preparation, distribution and record keeping functions in the delivery of pharmaceutical supplies to patients in accordance to department policies and guidelines.

Performs specialized billing, quality reporting/data analysis, prior authorization support, controlled substances, inventory purchasing, medication reconciliation/clinical support, sterile products, hazardous medication preparation, or Tech Check Tech functions contributing to essential departmental workflow and process efficiency.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Utilizes complex mathematical skills in computing the preparation and distribution of pharmaceuticals (ratios, dilutions, conversions), creating statistical reports and/or tally logs and proposing cost saving options and alternatives.

3. Facilitates general inventory control and billing principles and practices utilizing hospital pharmacy drug distribution systems and methods.

4. Assists in developing, revising and implementing new departmental processes based on organizational and departmental needs.

5. Trains new staff in departmental processes and procedures.

6. *Interacts and communicates with providers, management and other healthcare professionals to facilitate departmental operations.

7. *Operates pharmacy computer system to fill medication replacement orders and missing medication requests; accurately credits patient medication in pharmacy computer system as appropriate. Prepares specialized quality functions to assist Pharmacy Leadership.

8. *Adheres to safety and security procedures to promote a safe and secure environment including adherence to state restrictions on Pharmacy Technician functions, as well as informing appropriate personnel of any detected safety hazards.

9. Participates in departmental education and training programs as appropriate. Attends and actively participates in team meetings by problem solving and getting involved in the planning process. Supports the decisions and initiatives of the leadership group to support a cohesive department.

10. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

11. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

12. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of medical, nursing and pharmaceutical terminology.

2. Knowledge of data management, statistical analysis and informatics.

3. Knowledge of quality improvement principals and methods.

4. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

5. Skill in reasoning in order to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations with limited documentation.

6. Ability to accurately perform data entry functions and produce spreadsheets.

7. Ability to communicate effectively both verbal and written.

8. Ability to exercise courtesy and professionalism when receiving calls and visitors to the department and establish effective working relationships with all personnel.

9. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

10. Ability to maintain confidentiality relative to sensitive information.

11. Ability to organize and maintain filing systems.

12. Ability to create statistical reports and/or tally logs.

13. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

High school diploma or equivalency required. Must be at least 18 years of age. Registration as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Nebraska required. Pharmacy Technician Certification from a State of Nebraska approved certification agency required. Examples include: ptcb, ExCPT, UNMC (NE-CPhT). Minimum of one (1) year experience in an institutional pharmacy environment (hospital or health care facility with admitted patients) or a retail pharmacy environment required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(DOT)—Characterized as light work requiring exertion up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
