GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Department of Pharmacy has the responsibility for the implementation and coordination of medication control in the process of providing pharmaceutical care for patients of all ages within the medical center. Under direct and close clinical supervision from the Registered Pharmacist, the MMC Pharmacy Technician-Inventory assists pharmacists in pharmaceutical preparation, distribution, and the record keeping functions in the delivery of pharmaceutical supplies to patients in accordance with department policies and guidelines. This position holds the accountability for those Technician functions and tasks performed for Pharmacy Service, which require some pharmacy technical training, skills, or professional judgment; a degree of on-the-job training will also be included to successfully perform all tasks listed within this Job Description.

The  Pharmacy Technician-Inventory also carries the added responsibilities of Pharmacy Billing and Inventory Assistant. The additional tasks may be performed in the absence of a licensed pharmacist. A Pharmacy Billing and Inventory Assistant performs functions necessary to aggregate and modify data as necessary to accurately charge patients for the pharmaceuticals used as part of their care, as well as, provide comprehensive control of medications throughout MMC.

 

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Uses quality improvement processes, programs or outcome to help improve department operations.
  • Assists in inventory control, including ordering, stock rotation, and return of outdated medications.
  • Dons and doffs personnel protective equipment (PPE) properly and performs sterile compounding following USP 797 and 800 guidelines.
  • Prepares, labels, and documents IV products in accordance with department policies and procedures (if appropriate training has been received and documented in the employee’s personnel file).
  • Operates computerized and other automated systems/devices.
  • Restocks supplies and medications in the pharmacy, patient care units and ancillary areas and fills unit dose medication carts and trays.
  • Initiates telephone calls as necessary and receives/screens/routes incoming visitors/calls as appropriate.
  • Adheres to safety and security procedures to promote a safe and secure environment including adherence to state restrictions on Pharmacy Technician functions.
  • Performs inspections of facility wide drug storage areas within designated time frames.
  •  Accurately enters medication orders into computerized / manual systems for verification by a pharmacist.
  • Packages and labels medication for unit-dose distribution as required and checked by a registered pharmacist; maintains packaging area in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Assists in inventory control by communicating variations in pharmaceutical usage and urgent needs of pharmaceuticals to the pharmacist; adjusting supply/order levels based on usage; verifying orders and signing for incoming supplies; investigating back orders and stock outs and taking steps to maintain inventory; assisting with annual inventory.
  • Coordinates inventory and billing.
  • Maintains a complete and accurate record of medications billed.
  • Delivers medications throughout facility after verification by a pharmacist.
  • Completes all mandatory sessions/trainings. Attendance at Acute Care staff meeting is encouraged.
  •  Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  •  Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.
  •  Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.                                                                                                                        

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalency required. Must be at least 18 years of age. Previous work experience in a healthcare environment preferred.

Registration as a Pharmacy Technician in the state of Nebraska is required. Pharmacy Technician certification from a State of Nebraska approved certification agency preferred but not required until required by the State of Nebraska based on the 1-year anniversary of the individual’s State of Nebraska Pharmacy Technician Registration. Examples include: ptcb, ExCPT, UNMC (NE-CPhT).
