GENERAL SUMMARY:

Functions as a member of the multidisciplinary team providing a safe environment for all age groups of surgical patients; assists the perioperative nurse with patient care; prepares and maintains supplies in the operating room (OR) while maintaining a professional and efficient manner; ensures that procedure preparations are based on individual patients and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Performs these services under the direction of the RN or surgeon.

  • Defines and practices aseptic technique and infection control principles as they apply to the OR.
  • Manages supplies, instruments and equipment appropriately while maintaining cost efficiency according to MMC procedure.
  • Prepares, organizes, and anticipates needed instruments, supplies, and equipment for safe patient care and operative procedures.
  • Assists the nurse in perioperative care of the patient including transporting and positioning; counts, preps surgical instruments and supplies.
  • Assists nurse with specialty clinic procedures.
  • Operates sterilizers, washers and other equipment for processing items while ensuring appropriate tests are completed per IFU’s. Maintains records of all instruments, equipment, and sterilization processes.
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement measures to achieve positive patient outcomes; provides patient care in accordance with patients’ rights; participates and practices safety through active prevention and precautions; assures personal/visitor safety through measures of prevention and universal precautions.
  • Presents self in a professional manner and enhances professional growth and development through participation in education programs, current literature, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  •  Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.
  • Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technology program required. Surgical Technologist certification preferred. Prior Surgical Technology experience preferred.

 

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network.
