GENERAL SUMMARY:

Manages resources and delegates as appropriate to optimize achievement of unit scope and department objectives. Assists in the operations management of the unit. Promotes retention of staff through recognition and promotion of teamwork within and across shifts. Supports and encourages the professional development of operating room staff. Ensures optimal patient care standards through daily interaction and role modeling. Supports and facilitates a collaborative relationship between medical staff and hospital staff to ensure that patient needs are met related to equipment, supplies and competent staff available to deliver personalized care. Provides direct patient care in Peri-operative Services.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Takes on a leadership role in role modeling the mission, beliefs, and behaviors of the Medical Center; promotes and role models highly effective interpersonal relationships.

3. *Assists in concurrent and retrospective resolution of patient, family, and/or physician concerns and complaints.

4.*Ensures staff competence while emphasizing staff retention strategies.

5. *Ensures that existing policies and procedures are adhered to during daily interactions with staff; facilitates patient admissions, discharges and transfers within perioperative service line.

6. *Clearly defines, delegates and ensures completion of assignments to be accomplished throughout the shift; provides feedback in a timely manner to staff.

7. *Supports the Nurse Manager with communicating and implementing unit/area changes.

8. *Supports the preceptor program, new employee orientation, and student programs; communicates education and/or competency needs of staff to the Nurse Manager.

9. *Keeps the Nurse Manager informed of day-to-day operational needs/issues.

10. * Coaches and mediates staff behavior as needed and communicates with the Nurse Manager if a colleague fails to respond to proper guidance or adhere to standards expected for quality care.

11. *Takes patient care assignments or charge role during volume or acuity changes or during increased staffing demand. This may encompass up to 65% of normal weekly hours.

12. *Assists/expedites case turn-over and first case starts.

13. * Anticipates and reviews caseload and surgical schedule to plan for equipment and supply requirements for future cases.

14. *Effectively communicates with provider prior to surgery and post-surgery to anticipate/identify special case needs regarding patient care, supplies and equipment to meet or exceed clinical standards of care and practice.

15. *Maintains accurate/current preference cards in EPIC.

16. *Assists Nurse Manager regarding capital budget needs.

17. *Assists with record/billing audits related to correct charges.

18. *Coordinates appropriate vendor support.

19. *Routinely inspects and ensures that surgical suites / work areas are clean, and if found dirty or in question acts to correct deficiencies noted.

20. *Assists in detecting clinical outdates on equipment, drugs and supplies; acts to correct any deficiencies found.

21. *Presents equipment requests, supplies and capital items to Nurse Manager and Perioperative Value Analysis team as appropriate.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and certification in specialty preferred. Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience in the operating room required.

 

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare

professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network. 

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 6 months of employment.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)

 

(DOT) – Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
